SHIGMO

Shigmo is one of the biggest festivals that falls either in March or April. The music is typically dhol, taasha and kasale. Two variations of Shigmotsav, namely Dhakto Shigmo and Vadhlo Shigmo, are celebrated for different reasons. Farmers and the rural population celebrate Dhakto Shigmo as a mark of the harvest season's end. In contrast, Vadhlo Shigmo is celebrated on a big scale in the rest of the region.

The festival sees visitors coming in to celebrate it and learn about the rural aspect of Goa, with many people travelling through agricultural areas. We start this guide to Shigmo with the dates for this year. Shigmo Festival is celebrated a few days before the full moon night of the Indian lunar month of Phalgun, which is generally in the month of March. The celebrations culminate on the full moon night that marks the beginning of Vhadlo Shigmo for the next few days. Thereby, the festival has two variants – Dhakto Shigmo and Vhadlo Shigmo that are enjoyed consecutively.  Temple-hopping and enjoying traditional cuisine become the norm over the 14 days, making people aware of Goa's natural beauty, which has yet to be commercialised.People are clad in glitzy and colorful traditional costumes. Martial dances like ‘Ghode-modni’ or the horse dance, ‘Romand ‘Fugdi’ dances are performed. It’s a wonderful experience to witness these first hand as Goa’s traditions come alive. All these celebrations  is of Holi, the festival of colours.  And its happen in different places one - one day  and aslo doing steps on the music.
